yurztruly:

You know, I wonder if there is a difference in importance afforded conceptually to each aspect of a date, between those who have grown up using my system and those who have used yours?  It would be very difficult to measure since it’s such a subtle thing… and even if there were differences, the differences themselves would be subtle, but nevertheless, it would be interesting to discover that they actually exist.  To discover that differences in how we actually conceptualize time is influenced by something as arbitrary or trivial as the system we use to express it.

I get the logic behind why the day is the most important, and I would wager a bet that most Americans identify with the explanation you’ve given. Heck, I do too.   But I also might bet that if truly pressed to choose the alpha-dawg of the threesome (date/month/year)— not just on knee-jerk, but after careful reflection and second thought— most Americans would go with the month.  And most Aussies might go with the day.

Err… maybe.

*shrug*

i’m almost certain that every aussie would go with the day. :P it just plain makes more sense going from big to small. going in chronological order from the one that changes first (day), the one that changes second (month) and the one that changes last (year) - we’re talking about time, labeling it in the order that it moves in is rational. the only way it makes sense to me is if you put the year at the front, then the month then the day - i could live with that.

and we haven’t even touched on the metric system and fahrenheit vs. celsius.

someone once told me that americans changed things like this and certain spellings from the english versions to distance themselves from england after the whole independance thing happened. it doesn’t seem like a good reason to me since it’s still the same language, but maybe that’s why.

i wonder if it’ll ever change there. it would be really hard to get used to one thing and have to chage it. it would take a while to make the switch and be very confusing - and in the end it doesn’t really matter if you’re only using dates within your own country on a day to day basis, you all communicate the date effectively with eachother so it’s hardly something that you’d even think about doing. but on the other hand, since the whole rest of the world uses our way, maybe it’ll have to change eventually.

i’ve always wanted to change the whole month system too. it’s silly that they’re all different lengths! and september should clearly be the seventh month and october the 8th month, november the 9th and december the 10th month. LAME
